About Alternate Parallel Reality

Alternate Parallel Reality is the musical identity of Sean Cooper (that's me), based in south-east Queensland, Australia and is an indie electronic act – not affiliated with any with any record label or other commercial interest. For this reason, you're unlikely to see APR on MTV or the cover of Rolling Stone any time soon. I have a day job that helps me resist the temptations of artistic compromise.

The music itself falls under the loose category of “electronica” (which is a profoundly unhelpful genre description) with touches of “breaks” and “drum and bass”, often “psychedelic”, sometimes “ambient” and with a vaguely “industrial” flavour a lot of the time. And that's not descriptive at all...

Influences: Existentialism. Post-Modernism. Reality Television. Abstract Expressionism. Pop Art. Great Cinema. Game Theory. Paranoia. Stand-up Comedy. Gen X Literature. Pot. Atheism. Comic Books. Angst.

And The Music Of: Cabaret Voltaire. Future Sound Of London. Mlada Fronta. Cubanate. MaleOrFemale. The Church. The Glove. Tones On Tail. ...and many more.

I've been working under the moniker of Alternate Parallel Reality since 2005. Before that, I used other pseudonyms like Crash Symbol and Hammerhaus. I released an ambient album under my own as plain old Sean Cooper in 2003 and spent three years before that as Sean X, writing “dark techno”.

Most of that old stuff was utterly shit. Some of it wasn't too bad. This is my history as a solo artist.

Before that, I spent years playing guitar and bass in various bands – right back to high school. I guested with known acts like Boxcar and built my own group, Tainted Violets, to a point where we were supporting well-known international acts and being courted by major record labels. That was fun and exciting and all that, but I won't dilate on it here because it's a shared past – and not everyone who shares it with me perceives it the same way that I do.

Alternate Parallel Reality is neither prolific nor commercial viable. My releases are rare and usually given away. I am not manufacturing for a target market. I write when I'm inspired and hope that there's others out there who appreciate the frequency that APR generates.
